Why You Need to Tell Us if You Have Ringing In Your Ears

Posted on 1/20/2019 by Dr McMurray
Why You Need to Tell Us if You Have Ringing In Your EarsAs a dental professional, we know what to look for when it comes to your oral health. While we are able to spot many issues and help correct them, we are not always able to tell everything that is wrong.

We depend on our patients to let us know when something does not seem right. One thing that many people don't bother to tell us is that they have ringing in their ears. They do not realize that there is a connection between that sound and their oral health.

What is the Ringing?

The technical term for ringing in the ears is tinnitus. The first thing that people need to know about this is that it is not normal. The ringing is a sign that something is wrong. The problem is that there are many different causes for tinnitus. While many of the causes are something for other doctors to figure out, there are also some causes for the ringing that we can help with.

TMJ and Ringing

The temporomandibular joint is a joint on both sides of the head that connect the lower jaw to the skull. The joint is what allows the mouth to open and close. Some people struggle with pain and discomfort when the joints don't work properly. The joint may not work properly, or it may get stuck in the wrong position. While the joint is not in the ear, it is close and connected to the skull and that can lead to a ringing in the ear.

If you do not tell us about the ringing or pain in your jaw, we may not know you suffer from TMJ disorders. There are several ways to treat TMJ disorders and to eliminate the ringing in the ears. Many of the treatments do not require much effort. Make sure that you speak up about the ringing you hear in your ears, so we can help you do something about it.
