Single and Multiple Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is a procedure done to remove a tooth that is damaged beyond repair from its socket in the jawbone. Extractions are also done to remove wisdom teeth that may be impacted or create future problems. At South Valley Oral and Facial Surgery we specialize in tooth extractions of all varieties. Many times we are able to repair a chipped or damaged tooth, and if a tooth has been avulsed (knocked out) we offer many varieties of tooth replacement options including dental implants.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are the most frequently extracted teeth for a couple different reasons. Wisdom teeth are large and few people have the room in their mouth to accommodate them. Further, wisdom teeth frequently come in at odd angles and are at high risk for being impacted. Tooth impaction refers to a tooth that can’t fully erupt from the gum line because of another structure that is in the way, usually a tooth or the jaw bone. For this reason, we frequently extract wisdom teeth.

There are a few scenarios in which a person can keep their wisdom teeth or may not need them removed. Some people don’t have wisdom teeth or only have one or two instead of all four. Other people have plenty of room in their jaw for their wisdom teeth. As long as the tooth isn’t at risk of damaging existing teeth or structures within your mouth and you have enough room to accommodate them, you can keep them.

Impacted Canines

The maxillary cuspid (upper eyetooth) is the second most likely tooth in our mouth to be impacted, right behind wisdom teeth. These teeth are very important to our bite and have the longest roots in our whole mouth. These teeth are some of the strongest biting teeth that we possess. These are some of the last teeth to erupt from the jaw, usually around age 13. Canines are so important to the bite of your mouth because they are typically longer than the surrounding teeth and help to guide the lower arch into place cleanly.

As with all dental and medical issues, early detection is the key to treating impacted canines. It’s important that you bring your child in to be examined at least twice a year to ensure that we have a good idea of what is in store for their teeth.

Tooth Extractions

We perform tooth extractions for a wide variety of reasons. Sometimes, when a tooth is affected with deep decays and we can’t perform a root canal to save it we will need to extract it. Other times an accidental sports injury will knock a tooth partially out – if we can’t save a tooth that has experienced trauma, we will need to extract it. Whatever the reason, we are highly skilled in the science of tooth removal.

Whenever you have a tooth removed it is important to consider tooth replacement. When you lose a tooth and do not replace it your oral health can suffer greatly. We have a variety of tooth replacement options available. Please call us today at San Jose - (408) 479-9449 Gilroy - (408) 479-8788 to schedule an appointment.
