Are Dental Implants Really Better?

When a patient is missing either one or several teeth, there are a few options available for replacement. The only option that provides the retention and stability similar to a natural tooth is a dental implant. At South Valley Oral and Facial Surgery, Dr. McMurray can provide you a permanent solution with the placement of a dental implant. He will advise you through the process and make recommendations based on your situation.

When would I need a dental implant?

Implants are used to replace missing teeth, they can do this in a couple of different variations, either to replace a single tooth, or to serve as an anchor to retain a dental device such as a bridge or denture.

To replace a missing single missing tooth, Dr. McMurray takes the implant post and surgically inserts it directly into your jawbone. The area is sutured closed, and following a period of time of healing, he is then able to place a dental crown on the post to serve as a perfect looking and feeling tooth. The implant is strong, and permanent, meaning it is non-removable, it will serve as a root for your crown, continuing to provide the stimulation that your jawbone requires to not atrophy.

When replacing multiple teeth, we can either place individual implants, or place fewer implants in combination with a dental bridge or denture. Having your dental device secured with implants allows the device to have a firm base, that is durable and offers freedom to the patient in what they are able to chew.

Other Options

Besides implants, there are other options to replace missing teeth. Though implants are a great dental advancement, they may not be the best option for every patient.

Dental bridges can be used when there are two healthy teeth available to serve as anchors. The downside of this option is that it is necessary to permanently alter the two healthy teeth that will be serving as anchors. We need to reduce the two healthy teeth in order to fit the bridge, which consists of two crowns with the false tooth between. If at all possible, we always recommend protecting your natural teeth.

Partial and full dentures are another option available when replacing teeth. They can be attached using clasps, with over the counter adhesive, through suction or with implants. Using clasps, adhesive or suction, are possibilities, but will be an adjustment. The patient needs to be always conscious of their device and the fear of the device becoming loose. Clasps have the added possibility of damaging neighboring teeth with wear. Only dental implants allow the device to be retained firmly in place.

At South Valley Oral and Facial Surgery, Dr. McMurray can evaluate your teeth and overall oral health, he may make various recommendations based on your bone mass. Among your options, Dr. McMurray can show you how dental implants are the only restorative tooth replacement that provides the level of comfort, strength, and durability of your natural teeth.
