Reasons Why Your Jaw May Not Grow Evenly on Both Sides
Posted on 3/20/2019 by Dr McMurray
Your body has a left and right side. We often assume that the parts on the left side are the same as the parts on the right side. While people can realize that one foot is smaller than the other or that one arm is bigger than the other, they may think that most of the body is symmetrical.
It surprises many people to find out that the sides of their jaw may not grow evenly. This is why it can happen and what you need to do about it.
Your Jaw is a Joint
The jaw is a complicated instrument. When it works properly, you can open and close your mouth without pain. You can speak and eat without really thinking about what you are doing. You can do all these things because of the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. The muscles at this joint help move the jaw when needed.
This joint is also where many of the problems that people have with their jaw stem from. The muscles can become strained or tired. They can cause pain when they do not work properly. They are also part of the reason that a person suffers from an uneven jaw.
TMJ disorder or temporomandibular joint disorder occurs when the joint connecting the jaw to the skull is not working properly. The muscles may become strained on one side and can lead a person to try to change the way they chew, talk or move the jaw. It can result from grinding of the teeth. The compensation a person does to deal with this problem can cause an uneven jaw.
Other Reasons There are other reasons that a person has an uneven jaw. Some of these reasons are the result of problems with TMJ disorder and others are problems that can lead to TMJ disorder.
Improper sleep position
Chewing on one side of the mouth
Chewing on pens, pencils and other objects
Uneven tooth wear
Regardless of the reason for an uneven jaw, it is always best to try to do something to correct it. There are appliances and treatments for both TMJ disorder and the other reasons behind an uneven jaw.
