Problems When Snoring Goes Untreated

Snoring might just seem like a nuisance that keeps your partner from sleeping soundly at night, but it's much more than the loud unpleasant noises let on.

Not only is snoring bothersome to those around you, but it could also be bad for your health in several different ways.

Stressing Your Heart

Snoring often means that the airway is being obstructed or blocked for one or more reasons. Not only does this result in loud and unpleasant noises, but it also can result in low oxygen levels in the blood stream.

When that happens, the heart has to work much harder than it normally would to keep the organs oxygenated properly.

That means the heart beats faster throughout the night and you'll probably suffer from high blood pressure as well. This is all bad for your heart and not something that you want your body to deal with.

Respiratory Stress

The respirataory system is put through a great deal of stress due to snoring as well. The lungs and other respiratory muscles are required to work harder than normal to try and deal with the problems that are leading to snoring.

Damage to the Teeth and Jaw

In some instances, jaw clenching and teeth grinding are symptoms that are actually caused by the same problem that's leading to snoring. The body will sometimes cause the mouth to clench to help keep that airway at the back of your mouth from collapsing. This leads to problems with teeth grinding and jaw clenching that can cause other issues for your mouth and jaw.

Poor Sleep and Weight Gain

There is an increasing body of evidence that shows that people that suffer from poor sleep or lack of sleep also suffer from weight gain. That's because minimal sleep slows the metabolism and increases cravings for calorie rich foods. People that don't sleep enough could end up gaining a whole lot of weight, which we know isn't a good thing.

If you suffer from snoring there is a chance that we can help you. At our office, we frequently treat patients with snoring issues. If you're sick of snoring and waking your partner up, or you're concerned about how it's affecting your health, talk with us about possible corrective measures that can be taken.
